We took part in our first jumble sale of the year at the Old Blue Last in Shoreditch yesterday. I love a good ole rumble in the jumble and thought it'd be a fun way to clear out seasonal stock, slightly imperfect seconds and all those odds 'n' ends that clutter the studio. I spent a dusty Sunday morning delving way back into the stockroom and bagging 'n' tagging my finds. It took us a few trips to carry everything there, it's local to Superette so we didn't have the usual trouble of trying to cram everything into a mini cab.
Peta from Jumble Music gave us a table in the downstairs part of the pub and it slowly started to dawn on me that all the tables were quite small and close together and as usual we'd bought way too much stuff. I did my best to merch the space and try not to spill out onto our lovely neighbours. To our left were the Jumble Music gals themselves with a heaving rail of secondhand clothing and a table of bric-a-brac heaven. To our right was Laura (I found out her name when she spied a "laura" goth doll necklace in our sale tub) who was having a wardrobe clear out and next along was a super stall selling vintage trading cards and novelty jewellery (photo above).
The day got off to a fairly brisk start with lots of familiar faces dropping by to scoop up some Lady Luck bargains. We had printed up some tattoos, rosettes and dolls using our rejected stock of slightly imperfect wooden shapes and at £2 a pop they were very popular. We also sold quite a few bags of neon skeletons and our baskets of odds 'n' ends were sifted through and emptied out a little.
I also managed to have a quick skip around the place and bagged a knitted ice cream toy (from the stall photographed above) which I'm going to make into a brooch and a peter pan collar top for £3. Stall whispers revealed it wasn't as busy as the previous event and many thought it was due to London Fashion Week. I couldn't imagine high end fashionistas elbow deep in second hand clothing but maybe our beloved jumble sales are now the very height of fashion. Fancy that.
