To let all the Shoreditch scenesters know about our new tutti frutti goodies we gave Superette's window display a make over of the green kind! My Grandad on my Dad's side was a greengrocer and as a very small child we lived in the flat above his shop. I kind of remember being scared of the huge weighing scales but loved the rows of hanging bananas so we started by recreating these objects. Caroline our arty intern created some 2D hanging scales and Hana our fashion intern made nine plushie bananas from bright yellow felt. We sourced some fake grass mats and I picked up a fruit crate a day on the way in to the studio...I was particularly pleased to have found a pair of apple crates called "pink lady" and "playboy". Finally we turned Sam's "fruity cuties" logo into a 2D sign with our fave lo-fi materials felt and foam board and there we have it Superette's all new window display!
Miss Jodie Harsh is a drag queen extraordinaire and unrivalled queen bee of the party scene who we first came across as the agony aunt in Super Super. She hosts two of London’s most popular club nights (Foreign and Circus), makes frequent television appearances, dabbles in performance art and is loved by Alexander McQueen and Gareth Pugh. She's also in a DJing duo with Dazed and Confused's Jefferson Hack and parties with Kate Moss.
And guess what? This week in www.visaurlife.co.uk she has included Lady Luck Rules OK in her top 10 fave online destinations - yay! In Jodie's words: "This site is probably the most fun online for jewellery, accessories, bags, dresses and even stationery. The Reko dresses are the cutest about, with amazing patterns and designs, including Seaside Stripes and Disney Party. It's unashamedly girly, is colourful, bright and something a little different." We love you too Jodie!
Today we picked a name at random from all the people who had placed an order with us over the past week. The lucky lady is Rikke Lindholm Olsen! Congratulations to yoo-hoo! We popped your prizes in the post today and you're now the proud owner of a Super Duper charm bracelet, Zappa earring, Lipstick Lightning bolt brooch and pair of earrings, Sprinkles ice cream necklace, Gumball Goodies charm necklace and a Music Lover brooch...click here to check 'em out! Yay!
We love going to markets on sunny weekends and one of our fave haunts is Borough Food Market - the colours of all the fruits and vegetables are so exciting and a recent visit has inspired us to dress fresh this Spring! So welcome and come on into Lady Luck's grocery store because there's a new way to get your five a day...
Get a fresh spring look with one of our fruity cutie necklaces! The crochet charms are handmade by Alicia Kachmar in New York and we make the charms into lovely long gold toned necklaces. There are three cute characters to choose from – Strawberry Smile, Happy Apple and Banana Split. Yum! Also in season we have pom pom cherry necklaces, handmade carrot earrings picked from the allotment and a giant strawberry market style bag perfect for carrying your groceries home in!
We're delighted to have on offer a basket full of crunchy apple rings. Made from translucent acrylic with sparkle pop stalks by the to-cool-for-school Sperber Sisters in NYC. They're available in fruity red and apple green – take your pick. An apple a day and on your finger it will stay! When all our fresh new goodies started arriving I kept thinking "ooh, yum, yum" so it seemed only fair to make a necklace saying "yum". Check them out - click here!
Calling all customising cuties we have a competition full of fruity delights just for you! During a trip to New York last year we found this fun bunch of vintage fruit patches at a flea market and they inspired us to create our all new collection of fruity fandangles.
Now you can win these patches and all you have to do is choose one of the fruity patch characters and tell us what item of clothing you’d attach the patch to to make an outfit that’s the talk of the town. Consult your inner stylist and post a comment below…
The competition starts...now! You all have until midnight on March 12th to post your entries. We'll then pick our two fave entries who will each win a set of four patches and an apple necklace. We designed and sampled these apple necklaces last year but didn’t put them into production which makes them pretty darn collectible! Good Luck!
Thanks to everyone who entered our super Valentines Pez competition, I really enjoyed reading all the entries and it was very hard to choose the winners! I definitely want a PEZ in the shape of a Lady Luck Rules OK logo and a Robert Smith one would be pretty cool too. The entry which made me chuckle out loud belongs to Sophie who wants to immortalise her boyfriend Dave's head - Pez-Dave. Nice one. If your name is above and the date and time match your entry then you're a winner and we'll be contacting you today to find out your delivery details. Click here to check out all the entries! Yay!
It's our birthday today! Lady Luck is 5 years old! To celebrate we've got the mother of all prize draws - I've snuck into Lady Luck's history vault and chosen seven of my all time fave designs which are no longer available to buy...and you can win them all!
Firstly we have a single Zappa earring made from a vintage band badge from our "I'm with the Band" collection written about Sleazenation and The Face in 2003/4; next is a candy pink boombox brooch from our Riff Randell collection back in 2005 which was featured in Teen Vogue; then a Gumball Goodies necklace featured in oodles of zines including British and German Elle Girl; then a pair of Lipstick Lightning Bolt earrings and a matching red heart logo pin badge both from 2006; the most recent piece is from our new bubblegum range the jumbo neon ice cream necklace called Sprinkles and finally the piece de resistence the sole remaining Super Duper Charm Bracelet from 2006 made from over 60 different charms including most of our enamel designs - Robot Lover, Docey Doe, Tiger Beat, Starburst, Lolita and much much more.
All you have to do to enter is place an order between now and midnight Wednesday 20th February and we'll enter you into the draw to win all seven. In the meantime whilst you ponder your purchase here's some highlights from the past five years...it's been a blast and here's to the next five!
It's now 2008 and we're still as crazy about fashion jewellery as ever except it's not just me on my Portobello stall anymore - we have a super shop and studio in Brick Lane, my boyfriend Sam is our full time Graphic Designer and we have two wonderful assistants Becky and Laura and an army of interns. We've come along way baby and we're just getting started...
Holy moly! Our all new range of sunglasses totally remind us of Alabama Worley in the Quentin Tarantino penned film True Romance. In fact the bright blue pair near on match the exact pair in the film. Other super pop colours include red and purple plus film noir shades black and white. Team your shades with clashing tops, rock 'n' roll hair and femme fatal lips just like our crazy model Holly.
When I first watched True Romance Alabama's style awakened my inner trash fashion sense and I never looked back! Her handbag was a candy pink vanity case and she wore leopard print leggings, off the shoulder ruffle tops with polka dots, bright red lipstick and killer sunglasses. Wow! You can now steal a slice of Alabama's style with these super swish sunglasses. Wear with hair flicks galore and a sexy southern drawl...
Both these features on our website are dead handy for your friends and loved ones who aren't sure what to get you! If you like lots of goodies on our website and you dig surprises then the best thing to do is open an account which is quick and easy. You can then compile a wishlist by going to the product pages of your fave products and click "add to my wishlist" which will start a long wonder list which you can e-mail to as many people as you like. However, if there is one super special product that must be yours then go to the product page and click "tell a friend" and follow the on screen instructions and you'll be able to tell that someone special what you love and why as you can type in a message too. Et voila!
Along with teeny glass creatures and all sorts of random badges, one of my *all time* fave things to collect is olde worlde cake decorating books. Wowser, I think these books rock with their faded colourful pop images of strange themed cakes and crazy icing characters! Even the author pics make us smile! I hauled them in this week and Lady Luck’s taste buds were soon-a-waterin…
We’re loopy for love right now, so check out these crazy valentines cake snaps taken from my collection below…has anyone got time to make these? We sure wish we did!
We also thought we’d treat you gals to our top three sweetheart recipes from a book I unearthed on a junk shopping treasure hunt. Titled the ‘Best from Midwest Kitchens’, this 1940’s American book is jam packed full of recipes from the 1840’s Mid West. It’s sooo cool…I’m totally in love with the names alone - marble cakes, watermelon cakes, berry pies, peanut mochas...yum yum! Maybe you can use these hot sugary cuties to woo your secret crush, treat your dreamboat or just to surprise your fave buddies? Hope you likey a lot!
Becky x
PS: Next time your hitting the junk shops make a bee line for the dusty cookery corner and maybe you can snap up a cake making gem of your own!
Date kisses
4 egg whites
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
½ pound dates, cut fine
½ pound almonds, cut fine
Beat egg whites until they stand in peaks when beater is removed. Gradually beat in sugar. Add vanilla. Fold in dates and nuts. Drop with teaspoon on well buttered baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven for 50 minutes at 250oF. Kisses are done when they leave the sheet readily.
Dream bars
1 cup flour
½ cup brown sugar
½ cup butter
Mix together to a crumbly mass. Pat into buttered pan 9” x 9”. Bake at 350oF. Until slightly browned.
Mix together:
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
1 ½ cups coconut
1 cup pecans or walnuts.
Pour over baked mixture. Bake again at 350oF. Until browned, 20 to 25 minutes. When cool, cut into bars.
Sweetheart Cookies
¾ cup unsalted butter
½ cup sugar
1 egg yolk
1 ½ cups sifted flour
Cream the unsalted butter. Gradually add the sugar and yolk of egg. Add the sifted flour and knead. Chill dough for several hours. Form into tiny balls. Place on greased cookie sheet. Make a depression in the centre of each cookie. Fill the hollow with a tart jam. Bake in a preheated oven at 350oF., until all cookies are a very light brown. When cool, roll in powdered sugar.
We were walking to the studio last week when I noticed our local paper shop had placed four giant old skool valentines cards in their window. Wow! I ran straight inside and bought all of them. The guy behind the counter looked a little perplexed but kinda relieved - he's probably had them since the Eighties! I'm not gonna send them to anyone I just thought they'd look great in Superette...
We have one in the window (my fave - bunny with rosy cheeks and floppy ears, hearts, rainbow, musical notes, clouds) and three standing tall on top of our white shelving unit. For our valentines in store display I've rescued a heart shaped lamp I bought from Ikea which has languished in a box for two years and I've brought in my fave 60s french mannequin head to model our knitted bow hair clips. All in all it looks pretty loved up in Superette right now so why don't you pop by some time!
