If you don't have a date for Valentines why don't you plan a cosy night in with all your girlfriends and watch some retro rom coms with a big bowl of popcorn and hot chocolate with marshmallows! There are hundreds of cheesy love movies to choose from but my number one Valentine film is Pretty In Pink. Released in 1986, it was written by John Hughes who also did Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club! Pretty in Pink is based on a Psychedelic Furs song and tells us the story of a poor suburban girl named Andie, who falls in love with the very posh/preppy/rich Blane. A love that'll have to break the class barriers in order to succeed!
The role of Andie was played by Molly Ringwald, a true 80s teen princess whose red hair inspired my own (fake) one. She's the perfect crafty girl, always capable of turning any old clothes into a new flashy model and most of the time dressed in pink! Her outfits are definitely one of the best things about the movie. All those layers, the lace, the accessories, the jewellery overdose... I just love it! By Andie's side is always Duckie, very much the high school weirdo type. He's totally in love with Andie and his is probably the best scene of the movie: the moment where he "performs" Otis Redding's Try A Little Tenderness in Andie's friends record store! For the role of Blane we have Andrew McCarthy, the definitive 80s cutie. He's so sweet! Joining them, James Spader as the "evil" guy, Harry Dean Stanton as Andie's dad and Annie Potts as her always faithful friend.
I also love the music in the film! The amazing Psychedelic Furs tune and also tracks by some of the decade's finest - New Order, The Smiths, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark and Echo & The Bunnymen. I also love the fact that it was shot in the same High School as Grease, another great teen love flick. If you're planning a whole evening of movies here are some more of my all time faves... The Princess Bride, Breakfast At Tiffany's, You And Me And Everyone We Know, The Wedding Singer, Pillow Talk, Buffalo 66 and Bonnie & Clyde. Have fun!
The sun was shining for my yard sale on Saturday and it felt good to be having a clear out. We had a steady stream of second hand hunters all day and the tables, rail and market bags were given many a rigorous rummage! Some sold items didn't go far at all - a guy from the flats above Superette bought our 60s record player and a gal who lives around the corner skipped away with my pink lampshade and dressing table chair. On the flip side a mother and daughter came all the way from Canterbury and staggered away with bags of vintage dresses, hats, bags and a Mickey Mouse clock and a Mum of one of our website customers came to find us from Edinburgh and she snapped up some vintage bottle top earrings. It was a fun day all round and we didn't manage to put everything out so we'll more than likely have another yard sale next month...
We're having a super spring clean here at Superette this Saturday 26th January! For the past two years I've been storing thrifty finds in the basement and we're now turning the space into a workshop so it's all gotta go! I'm gonna haul everything out onto the pavement in front of the shop from 11am this Saturday. I have all kinds of things to sell including mirrors, clothes, bags (yeah lots of bags) and accessories. I have a mountain of bric-a-brac including crazy stuff like a pile of neon owl hanging decorations and butterfly jewellery holders. It's going to be really hard to say goodbye to some of this stuff but we have no room for it!
So come on by everybody and have a good ole rummage! We can take hard cash and cards too. Our address is Superette, 66a Sclater Street, Off Brick Lane, Shoreditch, London E1 6HR. Click here for a very helpful Google Map. Post a comment below if you have any questions...
February is the perfect month in which I can indulge my love affair with everything heart shaped. Although these days running an online shop means we tend to experience everything a month sooner than it actually happens which is a little weird but surrounding ourselves with cherry red treats sure waves goodbye to the January blues! To house all our new goodies we've created a new collection called Be My Valentine.
We have teamed up with two of our favourite designer-makers and asked them to produce a small collection of handmade treasures based upon the theme that if we could receive the perfect Valentines gift these goodies are what we'd wish for! Kandy Diamond our knitting extraordinaire has purchased a mountain of cherry red yarn and created a giant necklace spelling out the word LOVE, a super cute red bow hairclip and a matching big bow brooch both with pixel heart detail. Alicia Kachmar our crochet wonder kid from New York has brought to life a posse of happy heart necklaces with little beady eyes and a stitched smile available in dusky pink and lipstick red. Super sweet!
Those of us lucky enough to have a hot date planned for Valentines will need a drop dead cute frock to knock his socks off. Check out our best selling Cutie Pie dresses by Scandinavian label Reko now available in limited edition Valentines colours cherry red and cream cutie. The strapless sweetheart neckline will sure make him drool! Why not accessorize the dress with Photobooth - a silver toned photo frame necklace with heart detail from US cutemeisters Fred Flare. On the way home from your date jump into a photobooth with your beau and capture the moment on film which you can then wear around your neck. How cute 'n' special 'n' fuzzy is that!?
To source fancy fandangles for our heartfelt collection I took a trip with my beau to Paris for the day. Unfortunately it wasn't terribly romantic as we were up at 4am to catch the Eurostar from the newly opened Kings Cross terminal and for the whole day we poked about back street wholesalers looking for interesting materials and components. Stopping very briefly for a spot of lunch where Sam accidently ordered a meal of raw meat, poor thing. Goodies we've put together so far from our Paris trip are Falling Hearts, Is This Love and Bow Tie Hairclips. A highlight of the day was discovering a beautiful store dedicated to "boutons" where we scooped up armfuls of novelty types. Unfortunately the sad store owner told us they were closing down in a few weeks due to rising rents. What a shame!
On a brighter note if you snap up anything from our Be My Valentine collection before February 14th your purchases will be popped into special packaging with a valentines theme. Pictured above are some examples. If you wanna go one step further we are also selling love token gift boxes in which you can encase your treasures bound for the love of your life for a mere £1.
