It was Superette's first ever SWAP party and very much an experimental night for us. It was exciting preparing for the night and as usual we got carried away creating felt decorations featuring Christmas puddings and candy canes along with paper chains and scissor shaped garlands. A last minute buy was a can of snow spray and with the aid of a natty template Sam created a super cute window display.
We catered Lady Luck style for the event and managed in one morning to produce 48 cupcakes, 36 mince pies and 40 gingerbread men! Luckily Jen and Aline were on hand to decorate the little critters.
We flung the doors open at 7pm and after a slow-ish start our little space was full to the brim. We'd cleared the WHOLE shop so we could display everyone's swap goodies and downstairs Juliana and Lotte served up wine and festive treats alongside Aline and Jen who fixed broken pieces of jewellery for many a happy lady.
I'm afraid to say it was really quite chaotic and the 'browsing' period was kinda ignored by some crazed ladies who started taking stuff off the rails before 8pm. From that moment on it was every gal for herself and YES a few people did want the same item. Argh. I chatted to lots of girls who were ready to skip home all happy with their swap finds! I just had a bit of trouble with the early confusion and having to be a bit of fashion school mistress telling ladies to please put stuff back on the rails!
The evening died down around 9.30-ish so we called it a night, having just finished the Clothes Show Live we were all quite tired and wanting to go for a good dinner! So what would I do differently next time? I would ask swappers to bring no more than 5 items and hand out little flyers upon entry explaining the rules. I think a bigger venue would definitely be needed with more room to move between shelves and rails. Leah a good to friend of Lady Luck suggested an outdoors venue in the summer would be really nice and then I thought we could bring picnics and stuff. All in all I think "swapping" is an ace idea and next time I'd like to add in more of a customising element too. I also think swapping between a small group of friends is probably a more sane way to do it. In the meantime I'll be checking out the Swishing website to find many a swap party to attend myself. I've also heard Topshop is having one but that'll be the last place on Earth you'll find me!
