Tea, Cake and Badge Making!

The legendary Viva Cake was back last weekend for one night only and we were there with our badge-a-rama stall! On what felt like the hottest day of the year so far I have to say the thought of winching myself into a fifties frock and stuffing myself with tea and cake all afternoon was a bit of a worry but I just about managed it! We set up quite quickly at 3 in the afternoon and tried to help the Viva Cake gals as they had to overcome leaving their cakes behind, finding milk and a leaky urn. They were ready just in time for the doors to open and my what a wonderful display of vintage cake holders and doilies! We watched with wonder as all the lovely ladies in red lipstick and fancy hats swung by arm in arm with their dapper beaus.

Lashings of tea and cake were promptly served by a voluptuous tea girl in a kind of french maids' outfit and a roller skating, top hat wearing boy with bells around his ankles - it's true! The well groomed punters sat around playing cards, dominos and of course making badges. Later on there were Lindy Hop lessons and the Brick Lane Boogie boys covered a string of Johnny Cash songs which was amazing. Then it was time for the Baron of Piccadilly (that's our Sam) to take to the decks and begin his first ever DJ set - a rockin' 3 hours of Boogie Woogie and Honky Tonk Piano, 40's and 50's Rhythm and Blues, Hillbilly, Rockabilly, 50's British Rock n Roll, Skiffle, Savage Rock 'n' Roll, Sleazy Burlesque Bump n Grind, Surf Instrumentals, Soda Shop Pop, Mondo Hawaiian / Jungle Exotica, 60's Beat, Garage Punk / Psych - It was a blast!

Viva Cake - Saturday May 10th

A few weeks ago I received a very exciting Myspace message from Kate of the original rock'n'roll tea dance - Viva Cake! Two years ago we hosted our first ever Badge-A-Rama stall at their summer fete in the George Tavern and the same year the Viva Cake gals hosted a bake-off at Superette's first birthday party. The girls decided to disband last year but the good news is they're back this Saturday for one night only at the Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes. The night starts early at 5pm with FREE tea and cakes served by roller skating waitresses along with a beauty bar, bowling, parlour games, a raffle (including prizes donated by us) a bake off and we're hosting our Badge-A-Rama stall! Later on there will be Lindy Hop lessons, some ace bands and then Sam (aka the Baron of Piccadilly) will be DJ-ing from 11.30pm to 2.30pm!

Check out our previous Badge-A-Rama events...

Fuzzy Folk

Happy May Day folks! It's lovely and sunny in Shoreditch today and on our way into the studio we saw a group of six little cygnets in the canal it was so sweet. So it seems fitting to be launching our very own collection of fuzzy wuzzy critters today! It's another handmade collection and another new technique we've created ourselves over the past few months after collecting lots of boxes of vintage fuzzy felt. The cute characters are Fuzzy Bunny, Fuzzy Fawn and Fuzzy Skunk and they're all available as brooches or long gold necklaces with a ding-a-ling bell.

The adorable little play things are handmade from flock decorated wood and when we'd perfected the samples we began to plan the photoshoot. I remembered one of my fave Jackie Annual covers from 1980 which involved a super cute model hugging a furry white tiger. I have a small collection of vintage stuffed toys but we needed more! So last weekend I set off on my first thrifting jaunt of the year so far. I spent all day Saturday charity shop hopping in North London (I took the tube to High Barnet and then the 263 bus down to Archway jumping off every time I saw a charity shop!) and then on Sunday we were up at the Spring chorus to go car booting. My fave finds were a 1960s dog shaped doorstop (we had to glue his eyes back on though) and some old school pink curlers - we were going for a beauty school dropout look!

We called up our bestest model friend Suki Sou to come along for a day of fun and frolics in our newly refurbished Superette photographic studio in the basement of our shop. It was our first time working with hair and make up student Rachael who'd come all the way from Somerset and she was just great! Hope you enjoy looking through our photos and if you're going to treat yourself to a fuzzy friend I hope you enjoy hanging out with him, he'll make sure you look bunny cute at all times!

Superlicious!

Hi my name's Hannah and I'm an intern at Lady Luck Rules OK - one of my favourite jobs during my time here, has been getting ready for the super fun Mini photoshoot. Inspired by some of our favourite magazines such as Lula and the amazing dirtydirtydancing website, we decided the best theme for the new Mini necklace shoot would be a party! This gave us the perfect excuse to whip out the sprinkles, biscuits and of course party hats! After an exciting week of planning clothing, hair, make-up and of course props (including trips to my favourite vintage store, Beyond Retro) the day of the shoot was finally here!

Our super talented hair and make-up artist Tomoko set about getting ready our lovely model Dawn. First of all we shot Princess Hotdog, in this shot Dawn wore the bright party hat I had made the week before. Then we moved onto Whizz Kid followed by Milk Maid. This was one of my favourite shots (and personal favourite necklace) the cute balloon dress was a great last minute find and worked really well. This shot meant there were also a few biscuits around, I’d forgotten how yummy party rings were! We then moved onto Hot Shot with an impressive tiger mask, even though I think Tomoko enjoyed wearing it between shots even more than Dawn!

After this we stopped for lunch, and after a quick Brick Lane bagel (of course), we were back to our shoot. Our first job after lunch was to make the amazing hair pom poms. Tomoko had spent her evening preparing the paper, so we were ready to roll, it turned into a bit of a talent contest, seeing who could create the roundest pom pom, Cordelia definitely won for the size! With our collection finished, Tomoko was able to start putting them in the hair. This turned out to be a genius idea, I loved how well they matched our candy stripe top, very 80’s summer holiday, this became the shot for Eat Me Apple.

Our final shot of the day was for Pop Lolly, this was paired with some amazing sprinkle covered lips! After doing a few shots and looking back over them, something wasn’t working, what was it? On closer inspection we decided that this was because there was simply too much white in our sprinkles! This could only mean one thing….the only way to get rid of the white would be to pick them out ourselves. We all gathered around the table and began the task. After 20 minutes of doing this, we all agreed we would never see sprinkles in the same way again but luckily it didn’t take too long after we’d developed our own techniques. We returned to the shoot with a bright selection of pink, blue, green and yellow sprinkles. After Laura perfected the photos and Sam designed a super cool sprinkle background, the shots were ready for the website and the launch of the superlicious Mini collection!

It's been a busy weekend...

It was super exciting to launch our new collection of custom wooden jewellery late on Thursday night - we've been developing the idea for so long now so it was a relief to get them online and then kinda scary when all the orders came flooding in and reality hit that we had to now make them all! Sam and I decided to work the weekend to get the first batch done - laying the artwork out, sanding the wooden shapes, applying the artwork and a double coating of lacquer and then making into jewellery. I took a quick snap of the pendants while they were drying - can you see your name in there???

Talking of tattoos we met the lovely Susan a few weeks ago who popped into Superette to buy a pair of Lolita sunnies. She'd come all the way from Oxford and she excitedly told us about her Lady Luck Rules OK logo tattoos - wow! I'm a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to needles so I think I'll make do with my Swallow name necklace for now!

Tattoo Parlour

Welcome to Tattoo Parlour the all new range of personalised wooden necklaces and brooches by Lady Luck Rules OK! We’ve been busy bees in the Superette studio creating and making this rockin’ collection from an idea that popped into our head a few months ago. The wooden shapes are made from birch plywood which are cut and then sanded by hand. We design and apply the artwork to the wooden shapes in house and then make into jewellery adding two coats of lacquer so you can enjoy your custom made necklace or brooch forever and ever!

Our personalised tattoo name necklaces were originally inspired by my fascination with the 1950s rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson! We then choose three classic tattoo designs - the anchor, the swallow and the heart which Sam drew including a sassy scroll in which we can print the name or word of your choice - maximum 9 letters.

We were lucky enough to have Victoria aka Little Boots to model the collection for us. She's just released a record with Hot Chip and she can also be found spinning records at the Old Blue Last in Shoreditch every weekend. Tomoko our super hair and make up artist whipped Victoria's hair up into the most wild quiff and I added a vintage flower clip from Beyond Retro for a girly touch. We're wearing our rockin' name necklaces with wayfarers, tiki swimsuits tucked into pencil skirts and blue suede ankle boots. Yeah!

We've also made the designs into brooches which means these are the first Lady Luck Rules OK products which are available for BOYS too! Woo hoo. So girls now's your chance to get a gift for your beau to thank him for all the Lady Luck goodies he's bought you in the past! And boys we reckon these brooches will look ace pinned to the lapel of your skinny suit worn with cartoon tee and jet black wayfarers...quiff is optional!

I'm not really sure what happened the other day - we were about to close the shop when we were descended upon by a group of crazed girlies dressed like they'd just jumped out of the pages of a Jackie Annual followed shortly after by a Spanish TV company. They were in fact Laura's gal pals the Duloks a super fun band who you should definitely be on the look out for. They ran riot in Superette trying on Reko dresses, hooting and a hollering and throwing on jewellery and accessories. You can catch up with them at Leeds Ladyfest on April 13th and at the Old Blue Last in London on April 17th. They're touring loads so check out their website for more dates www.duloks.com.

Five, four, three, two, one...the competition is over! I've been in a daze all day trying to choose my two fave fruitilicious outfits - there were so many super entries. Thanks to every gal who entered and the one guy who obviously wanted to sew the banana patch onto his pants, but there could only ever be 2 winners...

Winner of prize 1 is Lauren who in her entry said she wasn't going to post until on her thrifting travels she "spied the cutest bright banana yellow pointy toe pumps. The first thing that jumped to my mind were these fantastically fruity patches." It's great how thrifting how can start the creative juices flowing, huh? Lauren then goes on to share all her styling tips and party stories...go Lauren!

Winner of prize 2 is Alex who wowed us with her "sizzling summer party" look which included a faded pink tee tucked into high waisted shorts worn with tacky flip flops and a bowler hat..wowee! Our fantastic vintage patches and rare apple necklaces will leave Superette towers tomorrow and lets hope you gals will be getting crafty with 'em this weekend!

Banana's Window Display

To let all the Shoreditch scenesters know about our new tutti frutti goodies we gave Superette's window display a make over of the green kind! My Grandad on my Dad's side was a greengrocer and as a very small child we lived in the flat above his shop. I kind of remember being scared of the huge weighing scales but loved the rows of hanging bananas so we started by recreating these objects. Caroline our arty intern created some 2D hanging scales and Hana our fashion intern made nine plushie bananas from bright yellow felt. We sourced some fake grass mats and I picked up a fruit crate a day on the way in to the studio...I was particularly pleased to have found a pair of apple crates called "pink lady" and "playboy". Finally we turned Sam's "fruity cuties" logo into a 2D sign with our fave lo-fi materials felt and foam board and there we have it Superette's all new window display!

Miss Jodie Harsh is a drag queen extraordinaire and unrivalled queen bee of the party scene who we first came across as the agony aunt in Super Super. She hosts two of London’s most popular club nights (Foreign and Circus), makes frequent television appearances, dabbles in performance art and is loved by Alexander McQueen and Gareth Pugh. She's also in a DJing duo with Dazed and Confused's Jefferson Hack and parties with Kate Moss.

And guess what? This week in www.visaurlife.co.uk she has included Lady Luck Rules OK in her top 10 fave online destinations - yay! In Jodie's words: "This site is probably the most fun online for jewellery, accessories, bags, dresses and even stationery. The Reko dresses are the cutest about, with amazing patterns and designs, including Seaside Stripes and Disney Party. It's unashamedly girly, is colourful, bright and something a little different." We love you too Jodie!

The Grocery Store

We love going to markets on sunny weekends and one of our fave haunts is Borough Food Market - the colours of all the fruits and vegetables are so exciting and a recent visit has inspired us to dress fresh this Spring! So welcome and come on into Lady Luck's grocery store because there's a new way to get your five a day...

Get a fresh spring look with one of our fruity cutie necklaces! The crochet charms are handmade by Alicia Kachmar in New York and we make the charms into lovely long gold toned necklaces. There are three cute characters to choose from – Strawberry Smile, Happy Apple and Banana Split. Yum! Also in season we have pom pom cherry necklaces, handmade carrot earrings picked from the allotment and a giant strawberry market style bag perfect for carrying your groceries home in!

We're delighted to have on offer a basket full of crunchy apple rings. Made from translucent acrylic with sparkle pop stalks by the to-cool-for-school Sperber Sisters in NYC. They're available in fruity red and apple green – take your pick. An apple a day and on your finger it will stay! When all our fresh new goodies started arriving I kept thinking "ooh, yum, yum" so it seemed only fair to make a necklace saying "yum". Check them out - click here!

Get Fruity!

Calling all customising cuties we have a competition full of fruity delights just for you! During a trip to New York last year we found this fun bunch of vintage fruit patches at a flea market and they inspired us to create our all new collection of fruity fandangles.

Now you can win these patches and all you have to do is choose one of the fruity patch characters and tell us what item of clothing you’d attach the patch to to make an outfit that’s the talk of the town. Consult your inner stylist and post a comment below…

The competition starts...now! You all have until midnight on March 12th to post your entries. We'll then pick our two fave entries who will each win a set of four patches and an apple necklace. We designed and sampled these apple necklaces last year but didn’t put them into production which makes them pretty darn collectible! Good Luck!
